Who is Mariusz Wach? Tyson Fury’s Newest Opponent

Recently, Tyson Fury finally announced his tune-up opponent for his upcoming megafight with Anthony Joshua, rumoured to take place towards the end of 2026. ‘The Gypsy King’ will square off against 46-year-old Mariusz Wach in Thailand, leaving many – including ourselves – feeling a little underwhelmed.

Of course, Fury was never going to risk his big AJ payday by taking on a particularly dangerous opponent – we highlighted this when we penned a list of five potential opponents that he might’ve took on. However, we really feel he could and should be challenging himself more than this.

Confirmed by The Ring on X (formerly Twitter), the fight will go ahead on July 24, just a day before Joshua’s fight with Kristian Prenga. Wach’s age is the main issue here. He’s so old, the most recent image that SmartFrame has of him is from 2015 (hence the outdated main photo – sorry!).

A solid fighter in his day, one wonders what the Polish giant has to offer in 2026, if anything at all. Nevertheless, let’s take a look back at his extensive boxing career before we criticise him any further.

Mariusz Wach fight history

When examining Wach’s fight record, one of them immediately sticks out from amongst the rest – his unsuccessful tilt at the Heavyweight world titles against Wladimir Klischko in 2012.

It was a typically dominant display from ‘Dr. Steelhammer’ catching the Pole with a number of thudding right hands and winning by a wide unanimous decision. To Wach’s credit, he had Klitschko in a bit of trouble at one point when he hurt the Ukranian with a well-measured cross, but it was too close to the end of the round for him to properly capitalise.

While this should have been Wach’s proudest moment in professional boxing, having gone the distance with an all-time great, it was immediately tainted after he failed an anti-doping test in the aftermath of the contest.

Outside of this, he also lost against fighters such as Alexander Povetkin, Dillian Whyte and Jarrell ‘Big Baby’ Miller. A tough, durable fighter, only five of Wach’s 13 losses have come within the distance. In 2024, he took on Moses Itauma, who bowled him over within two rounds – this was the fastest time in which he had ever been beaten by a considerable margin.

Outside of Boxing

Wach was involved in one of the most bizarre combat sports fights in history, when he took on a trio of ‘influencers’ called Wampirek, Pezet and Super Mario. We’ll be honest, even after some attempted research, we have no idea who these three people are and we doubt Wach did, either.

Nevertheless, he toyed with them as they tried and failed to gang up on him, leaving all three of them in a heap to win by – knockout, I guess?
