Sebastian Fundora vs Keith Thurman: Full Fight Card Preview

Sebastian Fundora is set to defend his WBC Super-Welterweight World title against former Welterweight champion Keith ‘One Time’ Thurman on March 28 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

This will be Thurman’s first world title fight since 2017, when he defeated Danny ‘Swift’ Garcia by split decision. Meanwhile, Fundora is gearing up to make the third defence of his WBC Super-Welterweight title, having previously seen off the likes of Chordale Booker and Tim Tszyu.

At 37 years of age, will Thurman have enough left in the tank to defeat ‘The Towering Inferno’? We gave our full fight preview below, as well as a brief look at the undercard.

Let’s get one thing out of the way, first and foremost – Thurman is not the lightning-quick fighter he once was. Certain attributes of his still remain, but his once-legendary hand speed isn’t as lithe as it used to be.

With that being said, his hand speed is still superior to that of Fundora’s. ‘The Towering Inferno’ does not rely on having fast hands – instead, he makes up for it with sheer volume.

Thurman is an accurate puncher, while Fundora’s guard is leaky at the best of times. We’d expect Thurman to enjoy some success in the early rounds, but Fundora will begin to land more often as the fight progresses.

If Thurman cannot gain Fundora’s respect within the first three rounds, this will be a very, very long night for the Clearwater native. Fundora is relentless – at 6ft 5, he is an athletic freak who can land punches from well out of his opponent’s range.

Since his first defeat, he has begun to manage the range far more effectively. He does not charge in, looking to absorb punishment in order to mete out more – instead, he allows his opponents to make mistakes from out of range and punishes them.

Thurman showed that his power has carried well over to the Super-Welterweight division, but he will need to get this one over and done with in the first half of the fight. If he cannot do this, the fight could get seriously ugly for him.

Full Undercard

The chief support bout on the undercard is between Yoenis Tellez and Brian Mendoza. A hot prospect from Cuba, Tellez is looking to get his career back on track after he was defeated by Abass Baraou last year.

Mendoza, on the other hand, is here to try and rip up the script. He has done it before – he actually knocked Fundora out back in 2023 with a vicious left hook, but has been beaten by Tim Tszyu and Serhii Bohachuk in the years since.

There is also a Heavyweight contest to look forward to on the undercard – undefeated Armenian Gurgen ‘Big Gurg’ Hovhannisyan will take on journeyman Cesar Navarro in a ten-round clash that will be the ninth fight of Hovhannisyan’s professional career.
