Derek Chisora vs Deontay Wilder: Fight Preview, How to Watch, Full Card & Prediction

Two old warriors will make perhaps their final bow on Saturday night, as Derek Chisora and Deontay Wilder square off in a Heavyweight contest at the O2 Arena in London on Saturday, April 4.

One of the longest-reiging Heavyweight world champions in history, Wilder’s stock has taken a major hit over the past few years – defeats against Tyson Fury, Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang have seen the ‘Bronze Bomber’ lose much of his once-terrifying aura.

Chisora, on the other hand, is one of modern boxing’s most notable ‘Cinderella men’. Never one to back down from a fight, ‘Del Boy’ has put a solid winning streak together in the last three years. But who will come out on top in this climactic showdown?

Coming into this one, we’re immediately concerned by Wilder’s recent form. His explosivity seems to be long gone – he hasn’t scored a knockout over a notable opponent since his first-round win over Robert Helenius in 2021.

Chisora, meanwhile, is enjoying an excellent Indian summer towards the end of his boxing career. A crafty, clever fighter with as much grit as anyone, the Finchley man has faced the best of several generations at this stage in his career.

Wilder cannot boast such a claim. While he spent over five years as WBC World Heavyweight champion, the quality of opponents he has faced is generally quite lacklustre. He picked up two impressive wins over Luis Ortiz in 2018 and 2019, but his resume is paper-thin outside of this pair of victories.

If we were talking about Wilder in his prime, this would be an open-and-shut case. Sadly, Wilder’s decline – not to mention his unwillingness to pull the trigger – will probably be his downfall in this one.

Wilder’s inside game has never been great. He has always been most comfortable at long range, keeping his opponents on the end of his devastating straight shots. Chisora is very, very good at working his way on the inside, using clever head movement and deliberate footwork.

Furthermore, Wilder has never been comfortable on the backfoot – Chisora’s aggressiveness will give him all kinds of problems. Unless he can walk Chisora onto a monster right hand (the like of which he hasn’t delivered in years), ‘Del Boy’ shouldn’t have many issues in this one.

Full Undercard

Viddal Riley and Mateusz Masternak will top the undercard billing, as they are set to fight for Masternak’s EBU Cruiserweight title in a 12 round contest.

Riley looked impressive in his last bout, when he outpointed Cheavon Clarke to win the British Cruiserweight title. He answered a lot of questions in that fight – but Masternak presents a completely different challenge.

A wily veteran, Masternak has an eye-watering 56 professional bouts under his belt – Riley has been in a meagre 13 by comparison. An underrated fighter, Masternak was unlucky to not win the WBO World Crusierweight title against Chris Billam-Smith back in 2023.

He’s now 38 years of age – as such, Riley will be expected to win this one. Nevertheless, Masternak has plenty of tricks up his sleeve and will be looking to use as many of them as possible on Saturday evening.

Elsewhere, Denzel Bentley will take on Endry Saavedra in a Middleweight clash and Essex Heavyweight Franklin Ignatius will square off against Coventry’s Matty Harris.
